Slope Safety: 7 Things to Check Before a Robot Mower Meets Your Hill

On a flat rectangle of lawn, most robot mowers are much the same. Put them on a bank and the differences show up within a week: one machine climbs and mows, another slides, scalps the turf, beaches itself and sends you a notification at seven in the morning.

If any part of your garden slopes, these are the seven things worth checking before you spend anything.

1. The rated slope angle — and which unit it is quoted in

Slope is quoted two ways, and the numbers look very different. A 45 percent gradient is a rise of 45 cm over a metre, which is about 24 degrees. A 45 degree slope is a rise of one metre over a metre — far steeper. Check which unit a spec sheet is using before you compare two mowers.

Then measure your own worst slope rather than guessing. A spirit level and a metre rule will do: hold the rule horizontal, measure the drop at the far end, and the ratio is your gradient.

2. Drive type: wheels or tracks

Two wheels on a slope put all the traction on two small contact patches. Tracks spread the same weight along their whole length, so grip does not disappear the moment the surface gets slick. It is the single biggest factor in whether a mower keeps working on a bank or starts spinning.

3. What happens on wet grass

Almost every slope figure you will read is measured on dry turf. Morning dew alone can cost a wheeled mower several degrees of usable gradient. If your mowing window is early or late in the day, treat the headline number as a best case and leave margin.

4. Lift, tilt and blade shut-off

Ask how quickly the blades stop when the machine is tipped or lifted, not just whether it has the sensor. A mower that slides on a bank will occasionally end up at an angle it did not plan, and the answer to that should be an immediate stop.

5. Weight and where it sits

Heavier is not automatically worse on a slope — a low, evenly loaded chassis is far more stable than a light one that sits high. What matters is the centre of gravity relative to the contact patch. A machine built around a low battery pack and a rigid frame stays planted; one with the mass up top tips.

6. What it does when it loses its position mid-slope

Banks are often the part of a garden with hedges, trees or a fence overhead, which is exactly where satellite positioning thins out. A mower that relies on satellites alone can stall or wander there. One that also navigates visually keeps its bearings and finishes the pass. Worth asking about specifically, because it rarely appears on the spec sheet.

7. Edge behaviour near a drop

A retaining wall, a pond or a driveway at the bottom of a slope turns a small slip into an expensive one. Look for a mower that lets you draw a no-go margin into the map rather than one that discovers the edge by reaching it.

And one thing to check in the garden, not the brochure

Walk the slope yourself after rain. If the grass moves under your shoe, it will move under a mower. Where that happens, either accept a narrower mowing window, or plan to strim that strip by hand a few times a season. No robot removes the need to know your own ground.
